The end is another beginning.

Why did I choose this course:

The title and teaching method of this module attracted me. Judging from the title of this course, it is a module that allows us to contact with new things. What’s more, this course is taught in the form of mooc. As a person willing to challenge new things, I chose this course without hesitation.

First impression:

When I finished my first lecture, I felt that I had chosen the right module because after a brief introduction to this module, I found that the knowledge I will learn in this module is closely related to my major——MSc Data Science with Business. What is more exciting is that I will study on mooc with people from all over the world.

Feelings in Learning Process:

In the following study, many articles impressed me deeply and had guiding significance. Because of my major, I learned to analyze data and build artificial intelligence. But our lecturers did not tell us the actual examples of these technologies, and the digital business model gave me great enlightenment in this respect.

How I fell about blog Writing:

In mooc 2.14, it was mentioned that social media will become an important criterion for employers to hire employees, and the coursework of this module is to help us to carry out the practice of building high-quality social media, and lecturer will give comments in feedback. This is more practical than other subjects. I also realized the importance of blog in my future, because this is not only the place where I share ideas, but also he can help us to think dialectically. In the process of writing, we not only need to express our views, but also let our views have evidence to support. When we are looking up data, we are thinking, which can help me get rid of the influence of wrong ideas in time. In fact, I enjoy reading comments under blog, because I can re-examine my articles from another angle.

What I learned and the plan for the future:

Summary of module learning:

I think I am really very lucky to meet such courses, because the modules of science students are often out of touch with reality. We need such modules to tell us where the knowledge we learn will be reflected, so we will be more motivated to learn our professional knowledge. I hope I can meet similar modules in my next degree. I will handle blogpost more professionally and be bolder in expressing my views. At the same time, I will leave more comments for other students and have more in-depth communication with them.

The Dark Horse of New Retail ——FRESHIPPO

In the digital economy era, the amount of data generated by online app is amazing. According to IDC statistics, the annual global production volume will soar from 16.1ZB in 2016 to 163ZB in 2025(Feng.ifeng.com, 2019). Due to the vigorous development of the Internet economy and e-commerce retail in China, a culture called “stay at home” has emerged in society. Chinese enterprises have also begun to explore their own’ data path’, and FRESHIPPO, a subsidiary of Alibaba Group, is an innovator in retail industry.

The Logo Of FRESHIPPO

FRESHIPPO 1.0

FRESHIPPO 1.0 is an Internet kitchen with online take-out as its main business and sideline for in-store orders and fresh food material sales. FRESHIPPO suffered heavy losses because of this not too innovative business model.

FRESHIPPO 2.0——New Life Driven by Reconstruction and Data

FRESHIPPO summed up the reasons for the previous failure and made innovations in the three aspects of “people”, “goods” and “field”.

FRESHIPPO‘s English Introduction Video

Innovation in “Human” aspect:

The’ 88 vip’ is a membership that brings together the benefits of Tmall, FRESHIPPO and Are You Hungry, thus breaking the gap between online and offline. Using Alibaba’s e-commerce platform big data to achieve personalized concessions which can give consumers a reason to buy.

Innovation in “Goods” aspect:

FRESHIPPO will label fresh products with QR or bar codes containing commodity information in the transfer warehouse and send the information online. The symmetry of online and offline information solves the standardization problem of non-standard products. FRESHIPPO will screen out products that better meet the individual needs of local people through big data which makes FRESHIPPO breaks the 85/15 principle of modern retail.

QR Code On Fish

Innovation in “Field” aspect:

FRESHIPPO uses the Tyson polygon algorithm to locate sites based on big data, which greatly reduces the requirements for store conditions and saves more rent.

This is the site selection of FRESHIPPO in Beijing

FRESHIPPO reduces the delivery time from half a day maintained by Jingdong Logistics to less than half an hour by setting up a transfer warehouse (stocking) and a front warehouse (saleing) in a “store is warehouse” mode. On-line orders are based on the store’s unique “sorting conveyor belt” and goods not available in the store can be delivered the next day.

The Sorting Conveyor Belt

In the restaurant area of the store, FRESHIPPO uses a brand-new model in which most dishes are delivered by robots and soup is delivered by waiters. moreover, the food materials are selected by diners themselves, and even payment can be made through face scanning.

Robots In Restaurant Area

Big data is the basis for innovation in these three areas and for new retail in the future. With the support of Alibaba’s big data, FRESHIPPO has achieved the following achievements before July 31, 2018(微信公众平台, 2018):

  1. The number of online order turnover is 1.5 times that of offline orders and the average number of online order for a single store is 1200+.
  2. Monthly sales Increase in single store is above 10% and the accumulated number of new young customers in single store is more than 20000.
  3. The turnover per square meter of mature stores more than 50,000, which is obviously greater than that of traditional supermarkets.
’Transcripts‘ OF FRESHIPPO

Yonghui supermarket is one of the first enterprises in mainland China to introduce fresh agricultural products into modern supermarkets, so they have a complete industrial chain and rich experience in the fresh food industry(Baike.baidu.com, 2020). However, Yonghui relied too much on the infrastructure network established under the old model when trying to use new technologies(Bilibili.com, 2020), resulting in slow progress(Which was describe in a lecture of an education institude called HUNDUN University). FRESHIPPO successfully achieved disruptive innovation from scratch by using its Alibaba Group’s user data, Alibaba Cainiao’s distribution capability and Alipay’s payment channel. Never before has any retail model been able to reach every customer, which is also an important reason why FRESHIPPO can make such rapid progress.

The Screen Shot Of The Lecture With Translation

On November 15, 2018, some citizens said that they found the staff in FRESHIPPO DaNing store had changed the labels secretly, and they moved the time back 6 days(Sohu.com, 2018). The incident also exposed the undisclosed and untraceable nature of FRESHIPPO’s label information sources. Workers can even return expired products to the transfer warehouse and then re-label the products and send them to other stores. This will lead to serious public food safety problems and social trust crisis. Its excessive expansion will also lead to problems in operation and management, because FRESHIPPO’s expansion speed is much faster than the cultivation speed of excellent managers. But I believe that in the future, they will optimize the management efficiency of their stores, rapidly transform and integrate traditional retail chains and launch a sprint to second and third tier cities in China. FRESHIPPO has the opportunity to become a multi-billion dollar business segment and contribute new users to Alibaba’s ecology.

Changes and Future Trend of Retailers

Every technological innovation will bring forth a batch of new industrial stars, and new industrial models will emerge as the times require. This article will focus on the changes of retailers in the digital economy era and the future trend

Retail can be divided into traditional retail, modern retail, e-commerce retail and new retail. The thinking model of this division is “Retail Triangle”. ‘Retail Triangle’ represents the diversity of choices, the cheapness of goods and the convenience of shopping, and it is an interpretation of users’ needs. Traditional retailing can only meet one of the three conditions, modern retailing can meet two of the three conditions, but E-commerce retailing can meet all conditions.

E-commerce retailing

When e-commerce sales appeared, the supply chain level was at its peak, and the format of this period met the three demands. All the information records of the store will be connected to the internet, which also enables the information between suppliers and retailers to be synchronized in real time. Cargo management has also become real-time Internet management. The offline shop is not necessary, because online shops are rent free and can operate independently which will save money. Traditional retailers will try their best to rely on e-commerce, such as Tesco and Boots’ independent e-commerce platforms. Retailers need to hand over the goods to the transfer company for transfer, and accept payment from the original only accept cash to cash and mobile payment in parallel(Investopedia, n.d.).

In the e-commerce era, users’ needs have been met. In China, for example, JD.com’s Logistics’s high-speed distribution benefits from its excellent management and equipment and China’s complete infrastructure, enables users can place orders in the morning and receive them in the afternoon. For catering retail, most delivery time can be limited to less than half an hour. When users search for commodities on Tmall, the search results reach dozens of pages. Due to the fierce competition among retailers, the cheapness is satisfied. Under such convenient conditions, users do not have to go out shopping, resulting in a great impact of online retail on offline retail.

Is e-commerce retail the peak of retail development?

No, development is only reaching the peak of the “retail triangle”. Too much convenience makes people lack scene experience and offline environment, and too much low price makes the quality of products not be guaranteed well. However, too many choices make users lose the ability to choose.

Of course, users will pursue cheapness, multi-choice and convenience, but this is not all they are seeking. When retailers were thinking about how to reconstruct the “retail triangle”, new retail emerged.

New Retailing

This concept was put forward by Chinese entrepreneur Ma Yun. It is a completely new concept and cannot be found in Wikipedia. The new retail mainly wants to combine online retail with offline retail(Baike.baidu.com, n.d.). According to the Chinese current living conditions, the retailers with innovative spirit think the new “retail triangle” represents to preferred option, discount and experience. Preferred option refers users want to choose products which have been selected according to the quality by retailers. Discount means that the user wants the retailer to give discount to the goods demanded by the user.  Experience means that users can have options to ordering the online service of delivering goods to their door or head to their offline store to have a good shopping experience(简书, n.d.).

Now the reason why Chinese people buy goods has changed from satisfying basic needs to satisfying personalized needs. In the future, the relationship between online and offline will not be as sharp as it is now. Driven by new technologies, retailers’ behavior will change again.

In real life, people familiar with the network will first trade with online shop, and then give users a discount that can only take effect offline, thus users are guided from online to offline. The same is true for guiding users from offline to online. Thus, retailers no longer use human flow as the optimal index for choosing store locations, but rely on big data to choose centers with the most densely populated population. Retailers can also provide customized services. For example, for the same piece of clothing, the basic pattern is fixed but the pattern and color can be changed, and the fitting is completed by displaying only the user’s head through augmented reality or virtual reality technology, meanwhile, the device collects data so that users can also fitting online. Retailers will analyze the sales data set to obtain the local consumption habits so as to provide the goods to suit people’s need. Under this assumption, companies with more data will be more likely to dominate new retail businesses and retail start-ups will become more difficult.

Every change in retail mode has improved people’s lives. In this technological change, I believe retailers will attach importance to experience.
